Do you actually NEED a Microsoft branded HD to upgrade? You don't need a Sony one with PS3…

If you're hardware savvy at all, then no. But the average person will have to buy a Microsoft one.

I picked up a WD 250GB Blue Series hard drive, flashed it with a copy of Microsoft's Xbox HDD firmware, opened my Xbox HDD case, and swapped it out with the 20GB one. Works great. (You have to use a capacity that Microsoft uses though, or else it won't work. Ex. 20GB, 60GB, 120GB, or 250GB.)

Their hand will be forced one blu-ray is the new standard... unless they come out with one of their amazing, ugly, rip-off clones like the Zune...

"Introducing the new 51GB Microsoft Big Disc."

Still burn my Steam games to discs. I hate not having a physical copy of something I have purchased.

Surely that's a stupid argument? We don't have the infrastructure to support the transfer or storage of 50gb-a-go games yet. Many place still don't have decent broadband. Plus discs are cheap and impulse buying in shops - and imagine getting a 'Halo 19' download voucher for xmas instead of a nicely wrapped box.

Besides, if digital media is the future - why bother putting a dvd drive in the 360? In fact why bother selling them without HD's if DM is so important?

Until people stop wanting something physical that they can hold, open and use, digital won't take over. And that won't happen for a LOOOOOONG time if ever.
