did that. i need to add a new internal or external. my ps3 was a gift. and it is only 40gig. so inned to add serious space i don't have any music on it at all or video just game data. but i did not know if an external could only save media or game data as well. and if i do an internal how do i et my game save data off the old drive?

        I get this problem a lot 😞
I have a 60gb full of game saves, game data, PSN games, Music and videos, my tips are:

Game data you arent playing delete! i saved like 20 GB from games (mostly japanese developers taking up like 5gb each for some reason)

Also if you can, i have a30gb iPod that i back my music and vids back up too πŸ™‚ now when i want vids i plug it in and just click the PS3 folder in my iPod πŸ˜„

k so i got the external hardrive a terra, however like i said no music just game saves and downloaded games. just found out u cannot use the external to save game data soooooo. i am going to back up on the external. buy a new internal and return the external:p it was a pain in the ass to, cause u have to change format to fat32 not that bad just took some time. so long story i know but if you want to store anything besides videos or music u are going to need a new internal drive. i guess i have to many games huh!!

just installed my 500 gig internal today sweeeeeet!
u can save game data however it has to be saved to your internal to pull it up when u play a game. so unless you want to copy everything to your external, delete it from internal, then copy it back to internel when u want to play a certain game, then when u r done send new copy to external, then delete it again from internal to get the space back. well u see it would just suck. if u have video music and such taking up your space then yes the external would be the best choice by far, however if your system is full of game save data and downloaded games the only way to go is new internal drive!!!! both were supriseingly easy to install though. the external you reformat to fat32 just need swissknife program to do that then you set up folders. and u are ready to go. the internal you just back up the data on ps3 pull some screws put in new drive install the latest firmware then restore system i was suprised how easy sony made it to upgrade. btw sony uses Seagate drivers so thats what i used both times not sure if it made it easier or not because they were the same brand but really simple.
