The long-running court case against the co-founders of Swedish file-sharing site The Pirate Bay has come to its conclusion, with all four accused found guilty and sentenced to a year in jail, as well as a fine of $3.6 million.
Since it was first established in 2003, The Pirate Bay has become one of the most visible file sharing sites, becoming a depository for a wealth of BitTorrents for films, games and music. Founders Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi were put on trial this February regarding breach of Swedish copyright law.
The site's founders employed a famously cavalier attitude to copyright laws, an attitude that wasn't diminished by the guilty verdict.
"Stay calm – nothing will happen to TPB, us personally or filesharing whatsoever. This is just a theatre for the media," said Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi over his Twitter account upon learning of the verdict. Kolmisoppi has since addressed press at an online conference attended by the BBC, going on to say, "It's serious to actually be found guilty and get jail time. It's really serious. And that's a bit weird.
"It's so bizarre that we were convicted at all and it's even more bizarre that we were as a team. The court said we were organised. I can't get Gottfrid out of bed in the morning. If you're going to convict us, convict us of disorganised crime."
