Just as criticisms of the "red ring of death" errors plaguing the Xbox 360 have begun to die down, Microsoft's crash-prone console has been hit with debilitating new problems.

After several months of complaints by users, Microsoft owned up today and announced that it was expanding its extended three-year warranty to cover the new "E74" errors, which it said were due to "general hardware failure".

Users experiencing the issue are greeted with a black screen with the words "System Error: Contact Xbox Customer Support" in various languages above an error code, "E74".

Microsoft said the issue was associated with the "three flashing red lights error" on the console, which has been dubbed by gamers as the "red ring of death" as the red lights show only once the Xbox 360 console has stopped working permanently.

In July 2007, the software giant took a $US1 billion hit to its bottom line in warranty expenses for replaced consoles and vowed to extend its global warranty cover for the "red ring of death" issue to three years. As of today, this warranty now covers those experiencing the E74 issue.

A Microsoft Australia spokesman confirmed the warranty and free repairs would be extended to customers in Australia. Those who already had to pay to repair the E74 issue will be offered refunds.

"We have already made improvements to the console that will reduce the likelihood of an occurrence of this issue," Microsoft said in a statement.

The Xbox 360 is also prone to scratching discs deeply if the machine is even slightly knocked while it is in operation.

Microsoft - which forced affected users to buy replacement discs - was sued over the disc scratching issue in the US. Documents unsealed in the class action suit revealed that it knew about the problems months before the console was launched, yet neglected to fix them.

Microsoft eventually instituted an Xbox 360 disc replacement program but this applied only to games published by Microsoft and the cost was $US20 a disc.

Separately, with the red ring of death issue, investigations by VentureBeat and other news outlets claim that Microsoft knew about potential hardware problems but did not fix them in the rush to get the console to market early.

Retailers reportedly found that up to a third of Xbox 360 consoles sold at launch failed.

Microsoft only owned up to the E74 issue after an investigation by gaming blog Joystiq, which uncovered scores of users affected by the problem.

Before today, when Microsoft added the E74 issue to its three-year warranty, those who experienced the error had to pay for their own repairs if it occurred a year or more after they bought the console.

Joystiq asked readers to submit information on when they bought their systems, what model Xbox 360 they had and when the E74 error occurred, and compiled the data to find trends.

"One oddity is that there is no correlation between the dates on which the systems in question were purchased and when they went belly up," Joystiq wrote.

"The error usually occurred after anywhere from 12 to 36 months of use, with many of you claiming that trouble arose on consoles that have already been repaired for Red Ring of Death.

"Whatever modifications Microsoft has made to the console to improve its reliability in the past years seems to have no bearing on the likelihood of E74."

There is one more thing that's hmmm interesting - people say ps3 is more powerful than x360.. so why the fuck so many games look worse and some of them are completely fucked up ?

Anyway.. my vote goes to make one console - x360 online play, mp3 player and ease of joining friends in online + ps3 reliability, blue ray etc. No more fights ! No more fanboys ! No more WAR ! xD ok maybe war is too much but still…

The reason why multiplatform games don't look as good on the PS3 is because they are developed on the cheaper/easier console and then ported over.
Exclusive games like MGS4 and Killzone 2 are extremely superior to anything that the 3-fix-me has to offer because they are exclusive.
Its got nothing to do with the PS3.. its the utter laze of the Developers.

2. MP3 player will be coming soon. Developers pay ALOT of money for in-game music. There would be no point in having music in a game if you could just put your own tunes on.
   There is also a thing called a CD player/ iPod with doc.. you could use that.
   But MP3 player is already here (KZ2). Its up to the developers to decided whether or not it should be included… meaning it CAN be done on the PS3.

360 has been out a year more than the PS3... but PS store is basically the same. All these features are slowing coming onto the PS3, like the chat room etc etc.

Agreed, there are somethings that the 3-fix-me has been able to like joining friends in-game... but seriously... thats about it.
The games on PS3 are much better, The blu-ray is much better, the hardware is much better, everything else is equal to or just behind the 3-fix-me. PS3 is not perfect... but its alot better than the 3-fix-me... at least it will work longer than a month

Because microsoft has patented everything, which means Sony cannot use it like they do on there console, Microsoft does this alot to gain a monolpoly.

Again because its patented, the way Sony got round that was making it so the Game develoeprs have to help implment, and many of the just wont.

If I want to play music I got a 5.1 surround sound, a laptop and an iPhone, really not a problem for me.

People laugh at RROD and E47 and disc scraching purely because they rushed the console or they would have had no chance against Sony.

Microsoft is a Software company, and Sony is a Hardware company, Microsoft has had 20 years of networking and online experiance, its very new to Sony, but for creating there own OS and still being able to compete against online play its great!

Software is sonys "fault" while hardware is Microsofts (litterally) but I would rather have a problem with software which can be updated then hardware that cannot.

PS3's online can imporve Xbox's hardware issues on your current xbox will not.

Also, I wont pay for a service which is being offered ALMOST at the same quality somewhere else, and its Free, and has better GFX and moer potential

PS3 is more powerful - FACT
Xbox has you to make a game that looks better then Metal gaer solid 4 yet, Killzone 2 has raised the bar and again God of ward III is about to raise the bar some more.

The reason some games look fucked up is because they were made for the 360 and ported to the PS3, games made for the PS3 look better then everything on the xbox.

Its good to ahve this war, its means that both companies will be pushed to there limits and we will get more for our money, people dont have to choose a side, but when it comes to microsoft and the shit that they pull, its just lame, so I am going to fall sides with the "under dog" and the console which has better value for money.

ive never actually been a fan of consoles since computer gaming tbh. microsoft really is failing, i have had several cases were i had to take games back because of the scratches and cracks my xbox has left in them, its quite annoying.

as of lately, ive touched my xbox about an hour total in the past 2 weeks. i only play it because of guitar hero, and have it hooked up to my surround sound which i can easily play music from

its getting near that time though, the red ring.. my xbox is about to crash for good, this post actually reminds me that i need to take it to gamestop and sell it, as for the money i receive..either going to a ps3, server box, or whatever else i want/need.

the only problem is that ive put well over $1,000 into my xbox and everything with it..i really dread to see what kind of lousy ass fucking price that they will make me for all of it =/

I wanna apologize for the way I come across sometimes about the 360.
I still think its a pretty sh*t piece of hardware, but I forget sometimes that some people here HAVE actually bought them and do have problems with them.
As a gamer, i feel your pain. I want you guys to have the same level of enjoyment I get out of my console. Without the failures, I wouldn't mind the 360.
Its just Microsoft's business decisions which do my head in.
Thats why I have a mac (with boot camp, granted) and a PS3

Anyway i had x360 for a bit over a year... then i sold it cause i needed money. Never had any problems with it, no rrod no errors no scratching dvds nothing. I can't complain about it.

Things i like about x360 -> voice chat regardless of game ur playing, ease of joining friends, mp3 player, party system. Btw. can u rent movies in europe already ? From this big service not from marketplace ? Forgot the name.....

Things i dislike about it -> microsoft points ! i mean WTF ! payment for online, microsoft crap everywhere, noise that it makes, halo... it was fucking boring... and maybe i could find something else...

Anyway there is one very very simple thing why x360 is still selling well and ps3 not. Marketing m$ has great team of salesman, they know how to do it, sony on the other hand doesnt. Look even with all those rrod and now this err and all this crap.. it's still doing good. JAP:

• PS3 (1st place last 2 months, uesd to be 2nd)

• Xbox (Always been last place in Japan except 2 months last year here it took 2nd.)

EU:

• Wii
• PS3 (PS3 is always 2nd Europe, only country its not is UK…)

We are surrounded by American media telling us that Xbox is the best here in UK because we Bum USA.

In the USA is rare that people have Ps3s because there media rams Microsoft down there throat, its a shame really.

More problems for microsoft this was on a gaming site, lol sounds like microsoft trying to get away without refunding for there cheap parts in there consoles.

When Microsoft announced they were extending their warranty for Xbox 360s that received a E74 error, I was curious how different the code was from the red ring of death. Not very, it turns out.

I contacted the company earlier this week to find out what a E74 code meant and whether it was possibly just a rebranded red ring of death.

Here's what they told me:

Once a repair is made and a person gets their 360 back, does the clock reset for the extended warranty in regards to this error?
No. The same terms of the three-year warranty associated with three flashing red lights error apply.

We reported in 2007 that Microsoft was reworking their 360s to no longer give the red rings to report certain errors because people were sometimes misconstruing them. Is that the case?
No, that is not accurate.

Can a 360 still get a red ring error, aka the red ring of death?
Yes, the three flashing red lights error message can still be present on the console in the event of certain general hardware failures. We have made improvements to the console that will reduce the likelihood of an occurrence of this issue. The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles have a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out.

Is the e74 code a replacement for the red ring of death?
No. The E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. This issue remains relatively narrow in scope and a very small percentage of our customers have contacted us about this issue. Again, we have already made improvements to the console that will reduce the likelihood of an occurrence of this issue.

But wait. What's with the contradiction? How can an E74 error message apply to the same hardware failures that are associated with a red ring if they're not the same?

"In some cases there is no difference. As we said, the E74 error message and three flashing red lights can in some cases indicate the same general hardware failure. However, it is not the same failure mode in all cases and there is no single root cause for these malfunctions."

So it sounds like there is an overlap between hardware issues that cause the E74 message and hardware issues that cause the red ring of death.

the 3 flashing red lights so that it is not in the media attention as much, and so that Microshaft don't have to pay out for this error... Which is the same as the RROD.
